"Rubber man" could be the world's bendiest man - PHOTO

02 March 2010 [13:12] - TODAY.AZ
He can wrap his ankles behind his head, wind his arms behind his back and wiggle his way through a tennis racket.
Now ‘Rubber Man’ Vijay Sharma is on the hunt for global fame and fortune.

‘It was when I was training for martial arts I realised my body was so bendable I might be capable of setting a world record in flexibility,’ said the 27-year-old.

‘The grand masters of martial arts became a great source of motivation for me.’

The supple shop assistant began his training after obsessing over Jackie Chan movies in his youth.

He began to squeeze into tiny spaces, curl up his body into boxes and learned to drink from bottles grasped between his toes.

But the hapless fame-seeker’s training hasn’t always gone to plan.

After seeing the tennis racquet stunt in the Guinness Book of World Records, Vijay became curious and went out to buy a racquet the very next day.

He quickly removed the strings and tried to pass his wiry body through the tiny 10in (25cm) frame.

‘I tried to get through it – but I got stuck for the entire night,’ he said.

‘I had to shut myself in my room and sleep with it. I got up at 3 o’clock in the morning and tried to get out of it.

‘I began to bleed but that still didn’t stop me from training harder.’

The willowy wonder, from Jhunjhunu in India’s Rajasthan, practises for four hours a day, performing on TV shows and at national talent competitions.

Vijay’s ambitions are driven not only by his desire for fame, he said – but also so he can avoid working in his father’s clothing shop.
