Toyota boss Akio Toyoda will testify before Congress about recall

20 February 2010 [13:58] - TODAY.AZ
In a swift about-face, Toyota's president announced Friday that he will appear before U.S. lawmakers next week.
The decision by Akio Toyoda to face congressional grilling Feb. 24 comes days after his announcement that he was sending another executive to Washington, which triggered a chorus of opposition.

The world's No. 1 carmaker is facing its most severe crisis in its 70-year history. The recent recalls of millions of vehicles has sent profits plummeting and severely damaged its once-sterling reputation.

The 53-year-old grandson of Toyota's founder will have his work cut out for him when he testifies in Washington, experts say.

"The disappointment among people in the U.S. is that the company didn't take the responsibility ensuring their cars were safe," Phil Baker, a product-development consultant to U.S. and Asian companies.
