Chile in epic wrong country name on coin fail

13 February 2010 [01:50] - TODAY.AZ
Several employees of the Chilean mint, including its general manager, have been sacked, after it was revealed that the country had spelled its own name wrong on thousands of coins.
The mistake occurred on a batch of 50 peso coins (worth about 6p) - on which the country's name appeared as 'CHIIE' instead of 'CHILE'.

The mint's general manager, Gregorio Iniguez, was fired over the blunder, along with several other employees.

Even more embarrassingly, the coins were in circulation for a year before anybody noticed that they couldn't spell 'Chile' right.

However, the mint said they had no plans to take the coins out of circulation, and they have rapidly become collector's items in the country.

The mint's head franker, Pedro Urzúa, denied allegations that the spelling error had been a deliberate move: 'I have been accused of having written the word "Chiie' deliberately, but it was an error spotted by neither myself nor the entire chain of people who saw and approved it afterwards,' he said.
