Hungarian castle for sale for just 0.3p - PHOTO

Got some change in your pocket? Want to buy a castle steeped in Oscar-winning glory? Here's your chance - the only downside it, you’ll still need to be a millionaire.
Almasy Castle dates from 1725 and covers 13,000 sq m (140,000sq ft). The good news: It’s vacant. The bad news: It needs £1m-worth of work

Remarkably, this castle is up for sale for just one Hungarian forint -meaning that it won’t cost you a penny. To be precise, it will cost you one third of a penny.

Klara Perjesi, the mayor of the Hungarian city of Gyula, about 200km from Budapest, is selling the building. But, as always, there is a catch.

The cheap sale of the Almasy Castle is a clever ploy to bring in an investor to redevelop the building, which is located in a tourism complex near a popular Hungarian spa.

In the Oscar-winning film The English Patient, based on Michael Ondaatje’s novel, Ralph Fiennes played real-life Hungarian aristocrat Count Laszlo Almasy. The castle was once owned by Almasy’s family.

Mayor Perjesi wants the buyer to commit to about £1million-worth of renovations to the dilapidated buildings. The city will only sell the castle if the renovation costs are guaranteed by the buyer.

The castle was built in 1725 and reconstructed after it was burnt down in 1801. It covers 13,000 sq m and has lain empty for a decade. The region, known for its sausage festivals, is close to the border with Romania and offers a direct train to Transylvania.
