Chicken lays giant egg

In Cheltenham, a chicken lays a giant egg that becomes the talk of the town, with its weight coming in just shy of a world record. And on Tuesday morning, that egg has gone viral.

Cheltenham is a borough of Gloucestershire, England.

On Tuesday, a man named Jeremy Power announced that his hen laid an giant egg over the weekend. Named rainbow, Power’s hen popped out an egg that is twice the size of a typical chicken egg.

"Sadly it's not a world record, ours comes in at about 130g (4.6oz) whereas there are eggs on record of 160g (5.6oz), " he said, according to the BBC.

"It's all a bit of a dodgy world really in that there's no one to actually authenticate the weight of an egg."

Typically, a chicken egg weighs about 2 ounces. So the egg that Rainbow produced was so large, it was over double in size.

As for whether or not Power plans to open the egg, think no longer—he will.

“On YouTube there is video - which I don't think is a fake - of an egg that size being opened up and inside is another egg,” he said.

"The question is what is inside our egg. I think I'll have to video us opening it up just in case there's a surprise in there."
