Spanish police have seized more than a ton of cocaine at the airport of Gran Canaria island, police said Tuesday, reported dpa.
The drug had been disguised as humanitarian aid.
The private plane carrying the cocaine flew in from Valencia in central Venezuela. It took off from the local airport at night, without authorization and while the runway lights were turned off, according to Venezuelan authorities.
Caracas then alerted several countries including Spain, which intercepted the plane and detained its three occupants. Venezuelan sources said they were German and Austrian nationals.
Venezuela detained 28 people.
