Melodifestivalen is growing bigger every year, according to esctoday.com. As a result, the final of the 2012 Swedish Eurovision selection will move from Globen, where it has been held every year since 2002, to the brand new Swedbank Arena, currently under construction in Solna, near Stockholm.
Globen played host to the final of Melodifestivalen for the first time in 1989. The event, one of Sweden`s yearly musical milestones, has been held without interruption every year since 2002.
On October 27th, a new sports and event venue, the Swedbank Arena, will open in Solna, near Stockholm. It is described as one of the most modern stadiums. The capacity will range from 15,000 in sporting events to 65,000 during concerts, allowing for events that could not previously be held in Sweden. The exact audience capacity for Melodifestivalen is yet unknown, according to Thomas Hall, event manager at SVT.
"We are extremely proud to hold the final of Melodifestivalen at Swedbank Arena. The event is an important part in the Swedish entertainment all year round and we get the chance to use the stadium`s capacity to embellish this moment for even more visitors", says CEO Thomas Per Lund.
The fact of the Melodifestivalen final moving to a new venue is, according to Steffan Holm of event company Live Nation, a "natural step" that will make it possible to "appreciate a greater production and offer both television audience and arena visitors a unique experience".
The the Melodifestivalen 2013 final is scheduled to be held on March 9th.
