Bonham Carter: 'I might go insane'

06 March 2010 [09:53] - TODAY.AZ
Helena Bonham Carter has admitted that she worries about going "insane".
The Alice In Wonderland star explained that several of her ancestors, including her mother, struggled with mental illness.

"There's a good streak in our family of, I'd say, healthy insanity," she told The Times. "My mother and, I know, my grandmother and my great-grandmother. I think it's very much genetic. I haven't suffered yet, but I know there's potential there."

Bonham Carter added that she has personally battled depression in the past.

"I've been depressed and I don't like it," she said. "I was definitely depressed when I was 18, wondering who I was. I was under a lot of scrutiny but I hadn't worked out for myself whether I wanted to act. I felt very isolated because I was out of my peer group."

She also explained that she had therapy but is unsure how useful it was.

"I'm not sure if the therapy helped," she said. "It just passed. It was fine. You find a way through it but it is hard, still, to talk about it."
