Azerbaijani artist Javad Mirjavadov’s artwork “Mother of God” (1987) will be displayed at Sotheby's auction in London.
The artwork of the late artist, one of Azerbaijan's greatest 20th century painters, will be on display at Sotheby's on February 16-19 as part of the Buta Festival 2015 - a celebration of Azerbaijani arts and culture , AzerTag state news agency reported.
Mirjavadov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1923. In 1949-1954s Javad lived in Saint Petersburg, where he created modernistic inspirations of European classic artists.
At the time Mirjavadov was the only Soviet artist who had been issued a permanent pass for the neo-western department of the Hermitage museum. During this period he also created improvisations of ancient cultural works of the peoples of the world, which were held in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.
Mirjavadov is an unfathomed genius of the 20th century, a non-conformist and a reformer, whose masterpieces have had a tremendous influence on the development of contemporary Azerbaijani art.
The artist died in the Copenhagen - Moscow train on June 24, 1992.
