The Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre`s staging Ruggero Leoncavallo`s “Pagliacci” has been spotlighted by Austrian opera publication “Der neue Merkel” („The New Judge“).

The author writes about the history of the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater built in 1911. He also highlighted the cooperation of the Azerbaijani theatre with foreign vocalists, ballet masters, producers and conductors.

The article also praised professionalism of the Azerbaijani Symphonic Orchestra conducted by People`s Artist Yalchin Adigozalov. Pagliacci is an Italian opera in a prologue and two acts, with music and libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo. It is the only Leoncavallo opera that is still widely staged.

Pagliacci premiered at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on 21 May 1892, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, with Adelina Stehle as Nedda, Fiorello Giraud as Canio, Victor Maurel as Tonio, and Mario Ancona as Silvio. Nellie Melba played Nedda in London in 1892, soon after its Italian premiere, and in New York in 1893.
