Georgia’s “Erisioni” to perform in Baku

03 April 2012 [13:49] - TODAY.AZ
A show by the legendary Georgian folk music ensemble “Erisioni” will take place at the Azerbaijani State Opera and Ballet Theatre on April 6. This creative project is organized by  «Buta» Arts Centre.

“Erisioni” founded in 1885, is often referred to as “a folklore museum”. The company that celebrated it’s anniversary (120 years) in 2005 now unites several generations of around 100 artists.

Georgian polyphonic melodies performed by “Erisioni” are regarded as a gold standard (model) even in a country as rich with music talents as Georgia. Now “Erisioni” can pride itself by having created a dance show that can easily stand a comparison with long-established “ethno-show” stars like “River Dance” and “Lord of the dance”.

“Erisioni” has thousands of fans worldwide. Hundreds of thousands have attended the show in Europe and USA. Not a single ticket remained unsold. Western press has called a show by “Erisioni” a real work of art.

A video for the “Shatilis Asulo” song about a girl from a highland village, initially shot as advertisement, was purchased by one of the French public TV Channels where it was screened continuously and found it’s way to the top of European charts.

A year after it’s conception, the show “The legend of Tamar” was a complete success during the American tour and then – under the name of “Georgian Legend” - the show has caused a great buzz in France, Belgium and Switzerland. Moscow, of course, was a must-visit place for “Erisioni”. The show debuted in Kremlin Palace with all tickets completely sold out.  Then, with the same program, “Erisioni” successfully toured China.

“Erisioni” is told to have the style or, to be exact, the dynamics that resembles that of “Deep Forest”, an acclaimed French group. This band uses national folk tunes (music from Africa, Balkans and India) giving them a modern electronic touch.

Thus, it should not come as a surprise that Pascal Jourdan who discovered “Erisioni” back in 1999 in Tbilisi, has decided to create a high-profile modern show, set on a producing ground.

Director of «Buta» Arts Centre Nasib Piriev said strengthening intercultural bonds and bringing prominent foreign groups and artists to Azerbaijan is seen by Buta as one of it’s major work tasks. “Therefore, we are happy to present a new program by “Erisioni”. We are convinced that a show by “Erisioni” will please everyone in Baku and will be remembered long after,” he noted.

«Buta» Art Centre was founded in 2004 to promote Azerbaijani culture worldwide.
