Buranovskiye Babushki learn Azeri before Eurovision 2012

Buranovskiye Babushki, a group of women ranging in age from 43 to 86 who will represent Russia in Eurovision song contest in Baku, said Azerbaijani Diaspora in Udmurtia helps them learn several phrases in Azerbaijani.

In an interview to "Russia" TV channel Chief producer of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012” Jan Ola Sand highly valued the chances of Russian group to win the contest. Everyone had either has a grandmother, and that’s why some people will vote for this group, he said.

Buranovskiye Babushki is a Russian ethno-pop band containing eight elderly women. Buranovskiye Babushki will represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The band consists of eight grandmothers, but only six are allowed to appear on the Eurovision stage. They are originally from the Udmurt Republic, from the village of Buranovo. The band performs most of their songs in the Udmurt language.

Their other recorded songs include: "Yesterday" (The Beatles cover), "Hotel California" (Eagles cover), "The Star Called Sun" ("Zvezda Po Imeni Solntse", Kino cover), "I Am Beautiful", "Sneg-Snezhok", "Chiborio", "Babushki-Starushki".

The group had previously participated on Russia's Eurovision song selection in 2010 with the song "Dlinnaja-Dlinnaja Beresta I Kak Sdelat Iz Nee Aishon" ("Very long birch bark and how to turn it into a turban"), where they finished third.

They made another attempt to represent Russia by participating on Russia's Eurovision song selection in 2012 with the song "Party for Everybody". The group eventually finished in first place by receiving 38,51 points ahead of former Eurovision 2008 winner Dima Bilan who also entered the contest with T.A.T.U. member Yulia Volkova with the song "Back To Her Future" which finished second place receiving only 29,25 points. They will represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The group says that in 2012 they will use any cash raised to build a church in Buranovo.
