Buta Art Center sponsors film ‘He Was a Giant with Brown Eyes’

31 January 2012 [15:39] - TODAY.AZ
The “Buta” Art Center proceeds to extend the area of its activities and to strengthen international cultural relations between Azerbaijan and other world countries, the Center reported.

The “Buta” Art Center this time supported a Swiss film-maker Eileen Hofer. She made a film about Azerbaijan under the name “He Was a Giant with Brown Eyes” by the Center.

Born in Zurich in 1976, Eileen Hofer currently is press officer of one of large-scale film festivals. Before the beginning of her own career of film-maker Eileen few years worked as journalist and chief editor for one of Swiss magazines. In 2004 Eileen took part in Berlinale Talent Campus, creative academy and public forum for hundreds of perspective film-makers from all over the world. Eileen is the author of several short-length films. All of them participated in a lot of prestige film festivals including those in Locarno, Clermont-Ferrand, Palm-Springs, Rotterdam, Brooklyn, Aspen, Vila-de-Conde, Namour, etc) and won dozens of awards, including the award of the main festival of Swiss cinema – Suissimage/Solothurn Film Festival New Generation Prize.

“He Was a Giant with Brown Eyes” is the first feature-length documentary film made by Eileen. The film tells the story of two sisters from ordinary Azerbaijan family, and changes taken place in their life in connection with divorce of their parents and emigration of their mother with one of sisters to Switzerland. This simple and in the same time touching story is represented on the background of colorific sights of Baku and mountain villages of Azerbaijan. It is amazing how deeply the Swiss film-maker could understand the mentality of people unknown to her hitherto, and reflect simple and in the same time wise truths of their living foundations. Apparently, the part of Turkish blood running in Eileen’s veins played the role here, the Center reported.

The first performance of the film will take place in January 31, 2012, at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam, where it certainly will get across the footlights, like previous films of talented and delicate film-maker Eileen Hofer.

«We always desired to deal with cinema», - Nasib Piriyev, Director General of the “Buta” Art Centre told, - «that is why we could not refuse from given opportunity to support this film. Because this is not just a cinema, it is very good and qualitatively made film about our native Azerbaijan, herewith taken by Swiss film-maker! And in this connection it is especially pleasant that Azerbaijan causes more and more interest in representatives of western culture. In January, 31, yet more people will be informed about us at the prestige film festival in Rotterdam, which is attended by approximately 350 000 visitors every year! And I hope that shortly afterwards the first performance will take place in one of new cinema-theatres in Baku, where this film will be brought up for discussion by our native public».
