Earlier, Azerbaijan received the first batch of purple London Taxi TX4s within the contract.
The contract was signed with the manufacturer for 1,000 cars. All the cars will be delivered to Baku by late 2011.
"Some are already functioning and the rest will be put into operation in the coming days," the source said.
A new private company Baku Taxi Company was established to develop a program launched by the Transport Ministry.
The source said the company has set a tariff for the use of new taxis. The tariff is as follows: when boarding a passenger pays one manat, and for every subsequent km - 0.7 manat.
Passengers can use services of new taxis when traveling outside of Baku, the source said.
The supply agreement is the largest contract for the company.
The total cost is about $ 27 million. The Transport Ministry said earlier that it plans to deliver 3,000 new taxis.
In general, 7,000-8,000 cars of different manufacturers are planned to be delivered to provide Baku and regions of Azerbaijan with taxi.
