Today, Conservation Agriculture machinery (CA) has been demonstrated in Salmanbeyli village of Agjabedi for the first time in the republic. The machineries have been purchased from the Turkish companies “ Altınöz” and “Ilgi” , within the project implemented by Agro Information Centre (Agro Informasiya Merkezi - AIM) for the period of 2010-2012 “Climate change adaptation and mitigation via Sustainable Farming Systems in central Azerbaijan”.
The participants were given detailed information about “Conservation Agriculture Basics” before the demonstration. It was mentioned that, Conservation Agriculture is not only a technical procedure, but it can also be considered as an approach aimed at environment protection. Conservation Agriculture is based on reduced tillage or zero tillage.
It’s necessary to fertilize the soil via mulching. Besides, these activities should be combined with crop rotation. By the help of this process it’s intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (steam water, methane, carbon dioxide – CO2 ) and to sequester increased carbon in soils.
The climate and agricultural importance of the Conservation Agriculture are the following:
Saves labour and fuel and causes stable production;
The soil gets enriched with the nutrients and it’s erosion reduces;
Wind erosion reduces and this gives an opportunity to sequester carbon in soil;
Conserves moisture in soil, etc
After the presentations, the demonstration of the working principles of the laser leveler, bed planting machines and legume sowing aggregates (maize, bean and pea) was organized in the open field “Laser leveller gives us an opportunity to keep the soil smooth for 4-5 years via levelling the soil more accurately. As it saves water and prevents nutrient erosions, it has great benefits. In this case, soil erosion and other negative factors reduces drastically.
Laser levelling of the fields is a simple and useful technology which saves water and provides equal distribution of water” said Zulfi Ismayılov, AIM trainer for Conservation Agriculture.
Representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, local authorities and also local and international organizations, farmers and agricultural extension agents participated in the event.
