The Belarusian side expresses its interest in participation in the project of establishing a transnational information superhighway "East-West", the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan said.

According to the Ministry, Belarus Minister of Communications and Informatization Nikolay Panteley expressed the country's position in this regard in a meeting with the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan Ali Abbasov.
Ali Abbasov has invited his Belarusian counterpart to take part in the 16th Azerbaijan International Telecommunications Exhibition BakuTel-2010, to will be held November 3-6 at the Exhibition Complex Baku Expo Center.
Earlier Abbasov said, within the BakuTel-2010 exhibition it is expected to sign a memorandum on the establishment of the consortium for creating the information superhighway "East-West", which, according to the minister, will start a commercial implementation of the project.
In September, it's expected to hold meeting on the project "East-West" with the participation of countries and transnational communication operators interested in the project on the UN initiative.
The adoption of a resolution by the UN on establishing the East-West super informational highway will eliminate all the unsolved organizational issues to lay the Caspian segment of the fiber-optic cable backbone. According to the political resolution all regional countries were recommended to take all necessary measures to implement this project. The project of laying the Caspian segment will be implemented under Azerbaijan's initiative.
At present, some agreements on laying the Caspian segment of the fiber-optic cable highway between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have been reached. The relevant bodies of the two countries are instructed, and the project is included in the protocol of the interstate commission.
Laying Caspian segment of the fiber-optic backbone between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan is more advantageous, as it reduces the route, to increase the exchange traffic and has direct access to Kyrgyzstan and China.
The resolution put forward by Azerbaijan to create information superhighway "East-West", was adopted by the UN within the 66th plenary meeting.
The "East-West" is intended to join in total 20 countries and play an important role in development of the region. Realization of the project will eliminate the "gap" between the countries within the Western European and Pacific basins.
