Azerbaijan may join Blue Stream: MP

07 August 2009 [17:44] - TODAY.AZ
“Azerbaijan may join Blue Stream gas pipeline in future,” parliament’s economic policy committee chair Vahid Ahmadov said.
He said South Stream pipeline is a serious rival to Nabucco.

“Despite the fact that the intergovernmental agreement on the Nabucco was signed in July, controversy has already raised around the project. For this reason, the exact date of full launch of the pipeline is not known yet,” he said.

The MP is confident that the project can be completed and put into full operation only in 2015.

“It is not known yet which states will fill up the gas pipeline. In fact, it is still not clear who is a participant in the project. Because the total capacity of the pipe is 31 billion cubic meters. Azerbaijan can supply only 5 to10 billion cubic meters.”

With regard to the possible accession of Turkmenistan to the Blue Stream project, the economist believes no problems are expected. However, he said as a first step the relations between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan must be settled.

“Turkmenistan intend to file with the International Court of Arbitration in connection with Kapaz field. I think that this issue will soon find its solution. Because Turkey , a Muslim  and fraternal country, is an important side  with this respect.  Nabucco will be filled with Turkmen gas also only after Turkey clears up the issue,” he said.
