The jurors board of the International Atomic Energy Agency has approved the project of construction of the first research nuclear reactor in Azerbaijan, said head of the Institute of Radiation problems of the National Academy of Science of Azerbaijan Adil Garibov.
He said within three years the institute will prepare the feasibility study and present it to IAEA.
At the session of IAEA, held in Vienna in 2007, it was decided to work out a project of construction of the first research nuclear reactor in Azerbaijan. The country's government agreed to construction of this object.
IAEA decided to construct a nuclear reactor of a capacity of 30 MW estimated at about $36,000,000 in Azerbaijan. At the same time, the capacity and the cost of the research nuclear reactor will be specified only after the feasibility study of the project is ready.
The Institute of Radiation Problems also prepared and introduced to the government the package of proposals on the construction of the nuclear power station in Azerbaijan, as it considers it important to create an alternative power source in the country.
