Korean SDX offering to build vessels of up to 60,000 tons displacement in Baku

28 December 2007 [11:28] - TODAY.AZ
A project on construction of the Caspian Shipyard in Azerbaijan will be presented by Korean STX late Jan-early Feb.

The due information was provided by chief executive of the Azerbaijan Investment Company Anar Akhundov.

He said the ceremony is expected to include the whole top-management of the Korean company.

It should be reminded that initially the presentation was scheduled for December.

"The plant is likely to be constructed near the Baku international trade port in the Alyat settlement. Anyway, experts say that the seashore in this region affords construction of two establishments", Akhundov said.

The cost of the project is being defined, as specific works must be carried out before it is possible to specify the amount.

"Initially, the project was estimated at $400 million, yet the cost may change significantly depending on the volume of works (dredging, shore protection, berth construction and others)", Akhundov noted.

The Korean company suggested to construct a plant capable of building ships of up to 60,000 tons displacement. Yet, the experts of the Caspian Shipping Company and the State Oil Company-major potential customers of the shipyard-do not consider it expedient to build ships of such a deadweight.

"I think the agreement will be reached during negotiations between STX and customers in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan", Akhundov said.
