During his visit to Baku today, Gerard Depardieu said that he hopes to develop a joint film project with Azerbaijan.

"It would be interesting for me to play the role of Alexandre Dumas, traveling all over Azerbaijan," he told Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfaz Garayev at the meeting. "I intend to look for documents on this subject in France."

If Dumas was interested in this region, then it means that this area has long been rich in cultural diversity, Depardieu added.

"Dumas was a man who loved good food and women," he said. "I think it would be interesting to personify his image. An Azerbaijani actress could play the Khan's daughter Natavan."

Alexandre Dumas traveled all over Karabakh in the 19th century and stayed with poetess, Natavan, who was a daughter of the last Khan of Karabakh.

Depardieu arrived in Baku to attend the Fourth International Rostropovich Festival. Today, he will speak at the Azerbaijani State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater before a performance of "Carmen." He will read his favorite passages from the novella, "Carmen," by Prosper Morime.

The festival takes place from Dec. 12 to 19 with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Rostropovich Foundation and the Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Ministry.

A special program has been prepared for Depardieu. He is also expected to visit regions of Azerbaijan.
