Azerbaijan’s Shemberev grabs gold in Qatar

Azerbaijani swimmer Maksym Shemberev has won a gold medal at the FINA/Airweave Swimming World Cup 2017 in Doha (Qatar). 

Shemberev became the winner in men’s 400m medley event leaving his rivals Ayrton Sweeney (South Africa) and Gergely Dyurt (Hungary) behind. 

He will also compete for medals in men’s 1500m freestyle event, Trend reported.

Other national swimmer Fatima Alkaramova took the fifth place in women’s 800m freestyle event.

Twenty-five-year-old Maksym competes in the Men's individual medley and represented Ukraine until 2015.

In 2015, Shemberev switched to represent Azerbaijan. During the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Shemberev won four goal medals in Mens 200 meter butterfly, 400 meter individual medley, 800 meter freestyle and 1500 meter freestyle categories.

Launched in 1979, the FINA Swimming World Cup gathers world-class swimmers in a series of two-day meets organized between August and November each year.

Over 150 swimmers from around the world are taking part in the two-day meet, which is being hosted by Qatar for the sixth consecutive year.

The FINA airweave Swimming World Cup 2017 includes eight legs in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. This year, the competition kicked off in Moscow and will conclude on November 19 in Singapore.

Berlin, Hong Kong, Doha, Beijing, and Tokyo complete the list of host cities for 2017.
