GM Mammadyarov to compete in super grandmaster tournament

Azerbaijani GM  Shahriyar Mammadyarov will compete in the super grandmaster tournament commemorating the 680th anniversary of Amir Timur, Azertac reported.

The tournament will be held in Uzbekistan on October 16-22.

Along with Mammadyarov, the tournament will bring together Israeli Boris Gelfand, Ukrainian Ruslan Ponomariov and Uzbek Rustam Kasimdzhanov.

Mammadyarov is a two-time World Junior Champion and gold-medalist at European Team Championships.

In 2003, the chess player won the World Junior Chess Championship and repeated his victory in 2005.

After winning  Essent Tournament 2006, Mammadyarov achieved world fame. He was the best player at the World Team Chess Championships 2009.

The national GM won the team gold medal for Azerbaijan at the European Team Chess Championship in 2009 and 2013.

Shahriyar represented Azerbaijan at the Chess Olympiads in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010 and 2016.

This year Mammadyarov won the 3rd Shamkir Chess Tournament, the Vugar Gashimov Memorial.
