The European Games 2015 in Baku will be the first ever sport competition across the globe to widely apply Cloud technologies, according to the Ministry of Communication and High Technologies.

Various infrastructure and program solutions, which will be used during the games, will be based on the Cloud technologies and the established infrastructure will be further applied in other sport contests to be held in Azerbaijan.

A cable infrastructure of 600 kilometers of total lengths was created in an effort to provide a high-speed data transmission between the sports facilities. Spatial information exchange during the games will be made through fiber optic lines of over a thousand kilometers length. The Ministry will supervise all works on the establishment of the telecommunication infrastructure.

The Ministry had earlier said the facilities, where the competition will be held, and other sites related to the games, would be provided with stable and quality communication within the preparatory works prior to the European Games 2015. Moreover, the Ministry plans to create alternative lines to use the wireless technologies and resources of the Azerbaijani satellite Azerspace-1, as well as ensure informational security of the internet resources and operator networks.

ISDN service will be applied during the games. Meanwhile, the internet access will be expanded. Free Wi-Fi networks will be installed in public places, including the parks, stadiums and shopping centers. The Ministry also envisages to carry out appropriate operations to provide quality and sustainable infrastructure for TV and radio broadcasting (including the HD broadcast format).

Baku will host the inaugural European Games 2015 next summer on June 12 – 28, involving more than 6,000 athletes from the National Olympic Committees of Europe across 17 days of competition in what will be the largest sporting event in Azerbaijan’s history.

The Games were designed and are to be regulated by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) and run with the support of the Baku 2015 European Games Operation Committee (BEGOC).

Baku was awarded the honor of being the first host of the games at the 41st EOC General Assembly in Rome, on December 8, 2012. The European Games will take place every four years thereafter, with the next competition due to be held in 2019.

Azerbaijan’s hosting the inaugural European Games testified to the country’s growing international prestige. Azerbaijan is becoming well positioned as a sporting nation and the country has gained significant experience in hosting major events.
