Batumi will host the 44th world chess Olympiad in 2018. The delegates of FIDE general assembly made this decision as a result of voting. The town in South Africa, Durban also wanted to host the Olympiad, but 93 delegates voted for Batumi. According to the President of FIDE Zurab Azmaiparashvili, Georgia has gained the right to host the most significant competition.
‘’I would like to thank the FIDE delegates who trusted us. We should do our best to make the Olympiad most memorable,’’ – Azmaiparashvili remarked.
Georgia has never been a host of the chess Olympiad. The next Olympiad will be held in Baku in 2016.
