Barca's new coach sure of Messi's influence to his appointment

24 July 2013 [11:20] - TODAY.AZ
Gerardo Martino has acknowledged the more than likely role played by Leo Messi in his appointment. "I have no doubt Messi spoke to the club's board. I'm sure Jorge [Messi's father] and Leo influenced the decision", he said in his first press conference since being officially named Barca coach.

All too aware of the calibre and credentials of the club he has joined, the Argentine noted that "Barcelona has a defined style; we will be the ones to adapt to that approach", adding that "getting into the swing of things on a day-to-day basis will be fundamental in helping us to feel more comfortable and more involved".

The former Newell's Old Boys coach claims that the biggest "challenge will be to adapt to a club as prestigious as Barcelona. Our aim is to be in contention for every competition". "We will have to acclimatise quickly and get used to the daily routine. Everything that Barcelona embodies goes without saying and for me to do so would be redundant, considering the [stature of the] institution and the squad. But we hope to adjust swiftly, get to grips with what is expected of us and be up to the task", he stated.

When exactly Martino will take charge of his first game remains unclear, with "contractual issues" still to be ironed out and several "football-related matters" left to be discussed, he claimed.

Finally, the Argentine made a point of "reaching out to everyone at Newell's who gave us such great support. We had a wonderful year and a half here, culminating in this move to Barcelona". "I feel the need to thank everyone who had a hand in us getting this opportunity", he concluded.
