Azerbaijan Islamic Party leader sentenced to pretrial detention

The court presided over by Judge Elman Ahmadov passed a decision on sentencing leader of Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA) Movsum Samadov to 3-month pretrial detention.

Samadov’s lawyer Anar Gasimov said at the closed trial Samadov was charged under articles #214.2.1 (terrorism committed on preliminary arrangement by group of persons, by organized group or criminal community (criminal organization), 214.2.3 (committed with application of fire-arms or subjects used as a weapon), 228.3 (Illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation or carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies (except for the smooth-bore hunting weapon and ammunition to it), explosives), 278 (Violent capture power or violent deduction power) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

Note that, on January 7, Mirhuseyn Kazimov was punished with 11, Elchin Hasanov – 13 days administrative punishment. Cousin of Samadov – Dayanat Alagar Samadov was detained on January 7, 2011, under the decision of Narimanov District Court. He was sentenced to 13 days of administrative arrest. Dayanat Samadov was sentenced to 2 month pretrial detention under the article #228.1 (Illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation or carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies (except for the smooth-bore hunting weapon and ammunition to it), explosives – is punished by corrective works for the term up to two years or imprisonment for the term up to three years) of the Criminal Code.

Other persons detained with Movsum Samadov – Mirhuseyn Kazimov and Elchin Hasanov were released on January 18.

Deputy Chairman of the Party on Organizational Issues, Haji Vagif Abdullayev was sentenced to 3-month pretrial detention. Abdullayev was charged under articles #214.2.1 (terrorism committed on preliminary arrangement by group of persons, by organized group or criminal community (criminal organization), 214.2.3 (committed with application of fire-arms or subjects used as a weapon), 228.3 (Illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation or carrying of fire-arms, accessories to it, supplies (except for the smooth-bore hunting weapon and ammunition to it), explosives), 278 (Violent capture power or violent deduction power) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

And Samadov’s appellate appeal from a judgment of Narimanov District Court was not sustained at the trial held on January 19 and decision of the Court of First Instance was kept in the force.
