License term of TV channels violating legislation not be extended in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council will not extend the licenses of TV channels violating the requirements of the legislation.

"While extending the term of the licenses, it will be considered how a particular channel complied with legal requirements on TV broadcasting for the period of its activity. These issues will be discussed at a council meeting. The main requirement for extending the license is the compliance with the law and procedural rules. The Council will also make a decision on TV and radio stations violating the requirements of the law and not complying with procedural rules, " the chairman of the Council Nushiravan Maharramli told Trend.

He said that according to the procedural rules, TV channels must apply to the council to extend the license for 6 months before the permits for activity issued six years ago expire.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of some TV channels wishing to improve their ratings by showing horrific films.

"The corpses of people must be demonstrated from a distance. People must be concealed. The bodies of brutally killed people must not demonstrated at all. In this regard, we conduct certain work. Similar cases on some TV channels are ceased after the conversations," he said.

He said that this issue will also be taken into account when extending the term of the license.

"The activity of each channel will be considered for 6 years. If all the requirements are observed within 6 years, no problems will occur. The appropriate measures will be taken against those who violated the Law on Broadcasting, he said.

He added that there are no serious problems yet. Broadcasting is conducted on the territory of Azerbaijan on the basis of special permits (licenses) issued in accordance with the Law on Broadcasting. A special permit (license) is issued for a period of six years.

Roughly eight national, 14 regional and 13 cable TV channels operate in Azerbaijan.
