National Academy of Sciences makes decision on approval of new selection system for family names in Azerbaijan

The terminology commission of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences made decision on approval of new selection system for family names in Azerbaijan. Member of the commission Sayali Sadigova told APA that the commission chose following methods to change endings of family names:

1. To add –oghlu, -gizi to the names of father or part of family name or any word chosen for family name.

2. To add –li, -lu, -ly to the family names of parents.

3. Not adding any lexical and grammatical word to the family name

4. To add –gil, - soy to the family name of parents.

5. To add –zadeh to family name.

6. It is not recommended to use such words like khan, bey, haji or effendi.


According to the decision, the commission applied appropriate government agencies to use new selection system of family names for new-born children beginning from January 1, 2011. The decision was signed by president of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Mahmoud Kerimov.
