64,448 mines and UXOs rendered harmless in Azerbaijan last year

64,448 mines and UXOs were rendered harmless during the operations, Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) said.

The operations were conducted in Fuzuli, Aghjabadi, Tartar, Khojavand, Aghdam, Tovuz and Agstafa regions and in Baku city. 3,072,171 sq m area was cleared of mines and UXOs within December of last year. 6,306 UXOs and 6 antitank mines were revealed and rendered harmless as well.

480 specialists and 120 assistants, 6 mine clearing vehicle and 37 mine dogs participated in the operations.

In general, 151,820,465 sq m area of Azerbaijan has been cleared off mines and UXOs by ANAMA up to now. 640,589 mines and UXOs were rendered harmless.

1 mine/UXO incident was recorded within December of 2010. Generally, 4 incidents connected with mine explosion were recorded last year. Consequently, 4 people were injured and one died. The died was serviceman, other 2 injured were servicemen, 2 civilians.
