Cigarettes prices rise in Azerbaijan. What will the effect be?

Rise in prices on tobacco production in Azerbaijan will have a positive effect as it will contribute to reducing the number of smokers in the country, Head of the Association for Communication in Healthcare Nurlan Aliyev said.

According to the monitoring carried out in the shops, the cost of cigarettes of local and foreign production has increased by 0.1-0.2 manat, he said.

"It has long been considered that increase in taxes levied on tobacco products is one of the most effective methods to combat tobacco smoking,” Aliyev added.

“Therefore, an increase in cigarette prices is welcome, and even a minimal rise in tobacco prices in Azerbaijan will affect the number of smokers."

Aliyev said Europe and the U.S. have long practiced this method of combating tobacco smoking. Cost of a pack of cigarettes ranges from 5 to 7 dollars there. The price rise will primarily affect the number of young smokers, Aliyev noted.
