Baku Education Department has instructed directors of all schools in the capital not to allow schoolgirls wearing hijabs to school.

Despite protest action against the hijab ban outside the Ministry of Education last Friday, the rules will not be reconsidered.
"Law on Education” stipulates that students should not differ from each other. A single school uniform has been introduced for this purpose," a source in the Department said.
Education Department also disclosed information regarding schoolgirls who wear hijab.
"Today, about 400,000 children study in Baku schools, of whom less than 1% wear hijabs. Lately, number of students who wear the hijab in schools has decreased by 80%," a source said.
The ban on hijabs in schools prompted an outcry by several parents who tried to hold an unsanctioned rally in front of the Education Ministry of Azerbaijan on Friday.
