European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan celebrates "International Human Rights Day 2010"

10 December 2010 [18:50] - TODAY.AZ
Today the whole world is celebrating the International Human Rights Day with the theme “human rights defenders who act to end discrimination”. On this occasion, the European Union underlines its strong commitment to promote and defend human rights throughout the world. Support to human rights defenders is one of the key objectives of EU human rights policy. To celebrate the International Human Rights Day, the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, along with many other EU Delegations across the globe, held a meeting with local human rights defenders.

"Being founded on the values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, the EU considers human rights as universal and indivisible values, and remains committed to promote them not only internally, but also in its relations with the rest of the world. In doing so, the EU highly values close cooperation with human rights defenders", said Ambassador Roland Kobia, Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan.

Ambassador added that human rights defenders carry out meaningful initiatives on the ground, also using EU's tools such as European Instrument for Democratisation and Human Rights, and invited human rights defenders to apply in the currently open Call for Proposal for democracy and human rights related projects.

Today's meeting was attended by major human rights defenders and allowed to take stock of their activities in Azerbaijan and the human rights situation in the country, as well as to share the views on future cooperation. It was followed by screening of several short movies on human rights.
