Shelters for victims of domestic violence to be created in four Azerbaijani regions

The shelters for victims of domestic violence will be established in the four regions of Azerbaijan, Sadagat Gahramanova,  deputy chairman of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children, said at the "round table" of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on December 10 - Human Rights Day.

These shelters will be opened in Lankaran, Khachmaz, Zagatala and Ganja, she said.

She added, that such a center operates in Lankaran. The preparatory work has been completed in Khachmaz and Zaqatala.

According to the UN General Assembly resolution dated December 17, 1999, November 25 is marked as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. UN, OSCE and Council of Europe consider it important to adopt a special law that prevents domestic violence in Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a law "Prevention of domestic violence" on June 22. 2010.
