Activities of more than 50 judges suspended in Azerbaijan over the past 5 years

Over the past five years, the Judicial-Legal Council has suspended the activities of more than 50 judges, Justice Minister of Azerbaijan Fikret Mammadov said in an interview with the Respublika newspaper. The minister said the activities of these judges have been suspended based on an assessment of their activities and disciplinary proceedings.

Mammadov said that during this period the Council began disciplinary proceedings with regards to 97 judges. As a result, 10 judges have been transferred to lower-level positions or positions with less work. Particular attention is paid to the activities of newly appointed judges, he said.

According to the minister, the activities of these judges have been evaluated, and thus, 28 of them have been sent to work in appellate courts.

"Unfortunately, not all new judges have been able to justify the high trust. Eight of them were brought to disciplinary responsibility," the minister said.

Over the last years, the judge staff in Azerbaijan has been increased by 50%, including in August this year - 25%. As a result, the number of staff units in the Supreme Court increased from 27 to 41, Appellate Court - from 63 to 135, the district courts of Baku - from 45 to 97.

According to the minister, as a result, the work loan on judges has reduced, cases are considered better, red tape and other violations have been eliminated. The Charter on the Ministry of Justice of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic was approved on Nov. 22, 1918.

According to the decree by former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev dated Nov. 11, 2000, November 22 was declared as the Day of Justice.
