Anesthesiologist Yaroslav Romanenko, who was arrested on charges of performing “black transplantation” operations, worked in Azerbaijan early in 2009, Romanenko’s lawyer Andrei Osipov said.
The lawyer said none of the doctors accused of performing “black transplantation” operations was guilty. He said his client had worked in Azerbaijan, but did not contact donors, nor learnt medical history of patients.
“Romanenko gave recommendations to the local doctors, participated in a number of operations, not only in transplantation. Maybe somebody urged patients to be donors, but doctors of the institute named after Shalimov in Kiev did not do it,” he said.
The lawyer accused Ukrainian Interior Ministry’s department to combat cyber-crimes and human trafficking of lobbying the arrest of the doctors and influencing inspectors.
“Inspectors do not read the materials, doctors are held in detention facilities. The worst is that the Interior Ministry gave false information to the presidential secretariat, Ukrainian president and mass media without carrying out objective investigation. The inspectors seemed not to understand the case. The judge, who arrested the doctors, was also unaware of the case,” he said.
