CIS Intergovernmental Council holds 22nd hydro-meteorology session in Gabala

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan organized the 22nd hydro-meteorology session of the CIS Intergovernmental Council at the Caucasus Riverside Hotel in Gabala. According to APA, officials of the national hydro-meteorological agencies of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine, representatives of a number of international organizations, as well as scientists and experts are attending the session.

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Husyengulu Bagirov delivered welcoming speech and said the development of hydro-meteorology in Azerbaijan as a part of world hydro-meteorology according to the contemporary requirements was one of the priorities of his organization. He spoke about the important projects within the Hydro-Meteorology Development Program in 2004-2010 approved by the order of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and work done toward the hydro-meteorological warning system. He said one of the unique research centers of the world was founded in the high mountainous area of Azerbaijan – Bazarduzu-Shahdagh-Tufandagh by the presidential order. Automated meteorological stations were established in 2700, 3500 and 4171 m altitudes. They are delivering operative information to the research centers.

President of the World Meteorological Organization Alexander Bedritsky and Secretary General of the organization Michel Jarraud spoke about the new tasks of the hydrometeorological services in connection with the global climate changes.

Michel Jarraud gave information about the activities carried out for establishment of Climate Services System accepted at the 3rd World Climate Conference in 2009.The heads of the national hydrometeorological services made reports, discussed mutual activity of the national hydrometeorological services within the framework of the World Meteorological Organization, implementation of hydrometeorological safety concept in the participating countries, priorities in the field of hydrometeorology for 2006-2010, priorities for 2011-2015.

The session will be over tomorrow. Draft document “Development strategy of hydrometeorological activity in the region” is expected to be accepted at the session. Later, the document will be introduced to the CIS council of heads of governments.

Climate changes, scientific researches, qualification of staff and a number of other issues will be reviewed during the session. Azerbaijan will chair the CIS Intergovernmental Council for Hydrometeorology next year.
