The first stage excavations carried out in Azerbaijan’s Balakan region is nearly over, candidate for a degree at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Institute of History Akif Mammadov said.
Head of Balakan region administration Asif Mammadov has officially applied to ANAS about the mound found on the territory of the Gazma village. After Mammadov’s appeal, the academy launched an expedition group, which was sent to the territory of the monument to conduct excavations there, Mammadov added.
Archaeological work has been carried out on the hill, where there is presumably the mound, since the beginning of last month and the first stage of the excavations is nearing completion. Materials discovered during the excavation date back to the pre-Islamic period. More than 30 human graves belonging to the pre-Islamic period have been discovered. Expedition team members have also found the remains of the wall from a very ancient habitation.
The expedition team also conducted an archaeological work at a place called "Khanjar Iten Gobu" near Kortana village of the region. As a result of the excavations, several cemeteries belonging to VII-IV centuries BC were discovered. Dozens of porcelain dishes, reflecting the ancient art and culture of Caucasian Albania were discovered in both necropolises. An interesting fact is that the burials at this place were carried through cremation. Buried are in a wrapped condition, and dishes found in the necropolis are almond-shaped and crescent-shaped. A huge amount of jewelry made of copper and other stones have also been found near the buried.
