
Police fined 2,500 drivers in administrative manner within the 'Clean Air' months in Baku, Baku State Traffic Police Spokesman Jamshid Hanifayev told Trend. The drivers were fined due to the fact that exhaust fumes spewed by cars exceeded the permitted limit of hazardous materials. The police took measures on roads and motor pools of Baku to prevent pollution of the atmosphere on Aug.1- 31.
The raids were carried out at 35 transportation agencies, Hanifayev said. Harmful substances of exhaust fumes spewed by cars exceeded the permitted limit at about 278 of the audited 1,001 cars. There were carried out maintenance work and the level of carbon in the exhaust gases had been brought back to normal in 191 cars.
During the month, the department checked cars of various agencies, departments and organizations. The amount of harmful substances in exhaust fumes spewed by cars exceeded the permitted limit was determined with the help of special equipment imported from abroad.
The department also held raids on the roads of Baku and checked 6000 vehicles, at 2,151of them harmful substances of car exhaust fumes exceeded the permitted limit. Police officers drew up reports in respect of drivers and used administrative penalties.
The actions of drivers, whose cars spewed most harmful exhaust fumes, fall under the Article 155.2.1 of the Administrative Violations Code.
According to this article, operation of vehicles, engines of which are defective and can not be repaired, is considered as a violation. The penalty for such violation is 20-30 manat. 60 % of the total air pollution in Azerbaijan is accounted for vehicles. Azerbaijan declared 2010 the Year of Ecology.
