Chief of Azerbaijani Penal Service receives head of ICRC delegation in Azerbaijan

Deputy Justice Minister, chief of the Penal Service, Lieutenant-General Nazim Alakbarov received newly-appointed head of the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Azerbaijan Cherine Pollini and coordinator of the Defense Program of the Committee Silvie Granisher on Aug. 26, public affairs department of the Penal Service said.

Deputy Minister gave information about activities of the service.

Nazim Alakbarov highly appreciated the cooperation between the ICRC and the Penal Service.

He said due to the expansion of the cooperation with the ICRC, the level of health services for prisoners and defendants, particularly for those suffering from tuberculosis has improved and the number of the deaths from this disease has considerably reduced.

Cherine Pollini gave information about the activity of the ICRC in the South Caucasus and said ICRC is dealing with determining missing persons and captives, offering aids to refugees and IDPs.

Silvie Granisher noted that observance of the ICRC’s recommendations by the penitentiary facilities and improvement of detention conditions have reduced the number of visits.
