Azerbaijan's Border Troops mark 91st anniversary

August 18 marks the 91st anniversary of Azerbaijan's Border Troops.
This day has been celebrated as a holiday in Azerbaijan since 2000. On August 18, 1919, the Parliament of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) signed a Decree "On State Border Protection of the Azerbaijan Republic" and "Law on the establishment of the customs border of the Azerbaijan Republic".

The section one of the Law consisting of 8 articles stipulated to create 99 border posts consisting of 992 border guards throughout the borders of Azerbaijan according to additional post of dislocation in order to protect the borders of Azerbaijan Republic from illegal trade and to combat smuggling.

In 2000, Azerbaijan’s then President Heydar Aliyev announced August 18 the day of the professional holiday of border guards. In general, the processes of national border service building start from August 22, 1992, when the flag of Azerbaijan was raised in the Nakhchivan border detachment for the first time in the country’s armed forces, creation of necessary border infrastructure and establishment of the State Border Service, associated with the name of the great leader .

The presidential decree dated to June 12, 2007 on establishment of the Academy of State Border Service also played an important role in improving the system of border protection. The Academy was established to train officers with a special higher military education, commanders and staff officers, military scientists for the State Border Service, improve their skills, conduct scientific research in the field of protection of state borders and military affairs.
