Number of cars in Azerbaijan increased

19 June 2010 [13:40] - TODAY.AZ
The number of cars has increased by 1.6 times in Azerbaijan over the past five years.
About 60-65% of cars fell to Baku, Baku State Traffic Police Department's service Head Vahid Aliyev told the "Respublika" newspaper. He said vehicles of post-Soviet time and the production of the CIS occupy 60 percent of the country' vehicle fleet.

The department registered more than 930,000 vehicles of various categories. About 642.4 tons of pollutants were emitted into air in 2008, of which 70% fell on vehicles operating in Baku. The number of the automobiles, operation time of which is up to five years, is more than 194,000, from five to 10 years - more than 239,000 and above 10 years - more than 492,000, Aliyev said. Aliyev considers it necessary to conduct a series of activities to solve environmental problems and traffic safety issues.

"Establishment of an automatic traffic control is reasonable for the availability of the construction certificate of the exported vehicles, certificate on their compliance with Euro-3 standards  and the highest European standards and certificate on their compliance with the republic's standards: for provision of the department's road posts with the gas detectors and instruments for measuring smoke; for approval of developing rules on recycling technically obsolete vehicles, whose repair and recovery is not possible; for creation of zones corresponding to modern diagnostic centers, for addressing of traffic jams and controlling operating modes of technical resources from a single center," Aliyev said.

These issues must be taken into the account in developing an integrated transport strategy and a road safety concept to solve the above problems, Aliyev said.
