A new canal, which meets modern requirements will be built in the Araz River basin, Garib Mammadov, chairman of the State Land and Cartography Committee said in an interview to the official website of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP).

"The length of the new branch of the Araz River is 130 km. In view of the water flow of 500 cubic meters per second, it will cover an area of 76,000 hectares. But this does not mean that this branch of the river will cover similar territory in the future. Special locks, guiding dams and other hydraulic utilities will be built to control the water," Mammadov said.
New branch of Araz passes through Imishli, Bilasuvar, Jalilabad, Masalli, Neftchala and Lankaran regions, and flaw into the Caspian Sea, he said. According to him, as a result of the natural disaster provoked by intense rains and floodsin the Kur and Araz river, 75,856 hectares of state, municipal and private lands remained under water.
