Stuck between the floors: Domestic violence in Azerbaijan

05 May 2010 [14:44] - TODAY.AZ
Early adoption of the Law on Domestic Violence "will prevent not only violence in the Azerbaijani families, but will also reduce the crimes related to human trafficking, the chairman of the "Clean World" women association Mehriban Zeynalova said.

She pointed out, that "domestic violence, (which also applies to forced early marriages), is now one of the causes of human trafficking in Azerbaijan".

"If the concrete measures are not taken, in the nearest future domestic violence can become one of the main reasons leading to human trafficking crimes", she said.

According to her, most of the problems of women applying to the association for help related to psychological pressure and physical violence rendered against them by other family members, mainly husbands or fathers.

According to the deputy of Milli Majlis (Parliament of Azerbaijan) Rafael Jabbarov, the draft law on domestic violence "should have been held at the current session of Parliament, but because of the need for serious improvement, the bill was postponed.

"The bill must meet not only international standards but also take into account the mental peculiarities of Azerbaijani family," said the deputy.

"We cannot allow the law to destroy families, on the contrary, all its items to be sent out to reunite scattered families," he said.
