Baku hosts 11th meeting of council of heads of CIS state news agencies

The 11th meeting of the Council of Heads of CIS State New Agencies started in Baku.
The event brought together heads of the state news agencies of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia and Tajikistan, as well as representatives of the CIS Executive Committee, Federal Agency for CIS Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation and CIS Intergovernmental Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation.

The focus of the event is media coverage of the 65th anniversary festivities of Great Patriotic War.

Speaking to a meeting, Chairman of CIS Information Council, ITAR-TASS Director General Vitaly Ignatenko emphasized an important role of mass media in victory over fascism, in solution of the veterans` problems and protection of monuments and graves.

The mass media may stand against extremist tendencies and attempts to sow discord among the nations, said Mr. Ignatenko.

The participants delivered reports on opening of the joint photography competition and web-project, creation of the CIS humanitarian portal, role of mass media in development of humanitarian cooperation in Commonwealth states.

An issue to celebrate the 20th anniversary of CIS in 2011 was also discussed.
