Visa-free travel increases number of Azerbaijanis traveling to Iran

16 February 2010 [20:27] - TODAY.AZ
"About 550 Azerbaijani citizens are traveling to Iran every day," spokesman for the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Azerbaijan Abbas Isgandari said.
He said Ambassador Mohammad Bagir Bahrami visited the customs posts between the two countries (Astara, Bilasuvar and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic) before Iran’s lifted visa regime for Azerbaijani citizens and met with the local customs officials, who assured him that visa-free travel wouldn’t create difficulties.

Isgandari said problems existed in customs posts, including lines of travelers were caused by the weather conditions and large number of Azerbaijani citizens traveling to Iran.

He said Azerbaijani citizens were traveling to Iran mostly for pilgrimage, visiting relatives and commercial activities.

The government of Iran has unilaterally lifted visa requirement for Azerbaijani citizens.

Nearly 200-250 Azerbaijani citizens traveling to Iran a day before the visa regulations were lifted.
