“I demand law-enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan to clarify suicide committed by 15-year old girl in Guba region”, Azerbaijani parliament’s Human Rights Committee Chairwoman Rabiyyat Aslanova said during the parliament hearing “Say No to Violence against Women”.
“Who will be punished for this incident? Why they don’t care about that? Why reasons of the incident widely covered by media are not investigated? Earlier officials of local authorities were dismissed for such cases. It is meaningless to adopt a law for prevention of violence against women without investigating reasons of such incidents,” she said.
Aslanova said early marriages among women were frequent in southern Azerbaijan.
“I ask Sheikh-ul-Islam, why no measures are taken concerning those mullahs who are realizing Shariah rules. Those mullahs must be punished and their activities must be stopped,” she said.
Deputy Prosecutor General Namig Asgarov answered the lawmaker’s question.
“Those who are accountable for such cases are always punished. There was a tragedy in Guba. That girl committed suicide not because of a marriage. She wrote reasons of the suicide in her suicide note. We are investigating this fact,” Asgarov said.
The suicide was committed on Nov. 28 in Susay village of Guba region.
Banovsha Farid Farzaliyeva, 15, was found by her parents hanged in the garret of their farm.
The investigators said 15-year old girl hung herself as her parents forced her to marry not her beloved, but another man.
