Two suspected of destroying monument to Azerbaijani warriors in Sevastopol arrested

Sevastopol law-enforcement bodies arrested two persons suspected of destroying the monument erected to the Azerbaijanis who were killed while liberating Crimea from fascists, chairman of Crimea regional organization of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis Congress Rahim Humbatov said.
He said chief of interior department of Sevastopol, Major-General Valeri Petukhov said the parts of the monument were also found. The detainees said they found the parts of the monument in the street.

Investigation is underway.

Azerbaijani embassy in Ukraine sent a note to the country’s Foreign Ministry in connection with the destruction of the monument erected to the Azerbaijanis who were killed while liberating Crimea from fascists. The note expresses concern over the act of vandalism and asks to punish criminals and restore the monument.

The embassy said the note was presented to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Oct. 6, but no reply had been received yet.

In the 1970s, on the initiative of Azerbaijan's the then leader Heydar Aliyev, the memorial complex was erected to the 77th division of the Azerbaijanis who fought for liberation of Crimea from fascists.

The memorial complex was destroyed by unidentified persons on Oct. 5.
