Azerbaijani education minister clarifies issue of tuition fees

05 October 2009 [14:14] - TODAY.AZ
“We know that tuition fees have been increased in some private higher schools this year and unfortunately we cannot influence the size of tuition fees of private higher schools,” Education Minister Misir Mardanov told reporters.
He said the Tariff Council sets tuition fees in the state-run higher schools.

“These norms are not applicable to private higher schools. It turns out that everyone can do whatever he wants. Of course, this is inadmissible,” he said.

As for the Azerbaijan International University, the minister said the government has not admitted students to the university this year.

“This was a message of the government to the leadership of that university. If the leadership of the university comes to a positive conclusion, this issue may be considered next year,” he said.

Mardanov said some teachers of state-run higher schools teach in private higher schools and the ministry made official statements about it several times.

“Every year serious measures are taken in private higher schools where the level of education is low. We have taken such steps this year, too. We do not differentiate between private and state-run higher schools. We are interested in quality of the education. We will support the higher school with high quality of education. We will take necessary steps with respect to the higher schools that do not meet modern standards,” he said.
