The teaching of foreign languages will be intensified in Azerbaijani secondary schools in the 2009-2010 academic year.
"In particular English and Russian teaching will be intensified in secondary schools," Azerbaijani Education Minister Misir Mardanov told reporters.
Since 2008, with the support of British Council, the Education Ministry has been launching a project to intensify English language teaching in seven Baku schools, said Mardanov.
"This project will be continued in the new academic year. In the first, second, fifth and sixth forms hours for English study will be increased. Teaching materials in English will be imported from the UK. The English language will be taught by teachers who have passed special courses," said the minister.
The intensification of Russian language teaching will be carried out in 50 of Azerbaijan's schools, said Mardanov.
"This project will be implemented with the support of the Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan and Russian Education Ministry. School hours for Russian in the first and fifth forms will be doubled. The Russian language teachers have passed training courses in Russia, and textbooks will be imported from there," said the education minister.
