Day.Az interview with chairman of the Congress of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis Akif Gulmamedov.
- The Azerbaijani community in Crimea has spread a statement about the frequent cases of the xenophobic attitude to representatives of national minorities, in particular, to Azerbaijanis in Crimea. What has caused this?- There have really been a couple of cases of persecution and intimidation of persons of Azerbaijani ethnicity by skinheads. But such cases occur everywhere and not only with Azerbaijanis and Crimea is not an exception. Crimea is the most painful place in Ukraine, where tensions are raised every day. Moreover, Crimea is a tourism city and in summer when a great number of tourists from various countries come, the number of such cases grows.
- Which measures are taken by the congress to avert such cases?- I have regular contacts with the Crimea, state structures to reduce the number of such cases. We take all measures to prevent discrimination of our citizens in Ukraine. But no one is ensured from separate cases. The meeting of the conference of the Ukrainian Azerbaijanis Congress will be held in Crimea on July 9 and I will hold a separate meeting with the powers of Crimea, where this problem will be discussed.
- Which problems do Azerbaijanis, residing in Ukraine face?- There are no big problems for today, we have regular contacts with compatriots, study their needs and try to help and ensure their comfortable staying in the country. The greatest problem of Azerbaijanis, residing in Ukraine is that they are not able to come to their native land, Azerbaijan, very often.
